Food for Thought: Inspectors cite sanitation issues at Lubbock restaurants

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Health inspectors cited multiple violations at three Lubbock restaurants, including issues with food temperatures, cross-contamination concerns and sanitizer problems, according to recent inspection reports. Most violations were corrected during the inspections, the reports show.

Vizio’s African Bar & Restaurant at 3131 34th had 16 violations.

  • Here’s a look at their priority violations.
  • Cooked beef was not at least 135 degrees.
  • Cooked tomatoes had the wrong date mark and were held past its use-by date.
  • The sanitizer solution was at toxic levels.
  • There was a pink substance in the soda nozzles.
  • There was a can of insecticide not labeled for commercial kitchens.
  • There was no hot water or water pressure at a hand sink. Another hand sink was available to use.
  • There was no soap or paper towels at a hand sink.

  • Accumulation of food residue on the bottom of the RIF.
  • Single use article used as scoop and stored in Garri.

District 1 King Claw & Lounge at 5217 98th had 17 violations.

  • Here’s a look at their priority violations.
  • Cooked rice was not at least 135 degrees.
  • Raw chicken was stored above ready-to-eat rice.
  • Cooked rice was not cooled properly.
  • The dish washer was not sanitizing.
  • There was a black substance in the soda nozzles.
  • The knife holder was dirty.
  • An employee’s ointment was above food items.
  • There were no paper towels at a hand sink.
  • The water at one of the hand sinks did not get hot enough.
  • Cardboard was in the bottom of reach-in coolers. It was saturated with food residue.
  • The inspector notes, due to the number and the nature of the violations management did not show proper food safety knowledge.

  • Fan in the warewash area was visibly soiled with a buildup of greasy debris.
  • Single-use plastic cup was reused as a scoop to dispense bulk store food items.

  • Reach in freezers in the kitchen had a heavy layer of ice on the walls.
  • Wet wiping cloth, not in immediate use, was stored outside of a sanitizer bucket in the cooking area.
