LUBBOCK, Texas — Senate Bill 4 can go into effect May 15, pending legal interference, but Lubbock Police Chief Seth Herman says he expects nothing to change right away.
The law, passed in 2023, creates state charges for illegal entry and re-entry. The new charges allow local law enforcement to make immigration-related arrests, a power previously only given to federal authorities.
“It is imperative that everyone understand we are not changing our protocols or policies as it currently stands,” said Herman. “The inclusion of SB4 actually brings on more questions than it brings on answers.”
