After 35 years, Hong Kong Cafe will close on July 31

Hong Kong Cafe, a campus-area staple for Cantonese food at the corner of Regent and South Mills, will close its doors on July 31.

The restaurant is owned by siblings Terry, Shirley, Hong, Philip and Wing Leung. Peerless Development, an Illinois developer, received approval to build a6-story apartment building “with ground-floor commercial space” across three lots encompassing the site of Hong Kong Cafe and neighboring Choles Floral.

The developers plan to build a 111-unit apartment complex. About 1,200 square feet on the first floor will be dedicated to commercial space after Peerless requested an exemption to use less than 50% of the street-facing facade for commercial space…
