Opinion | Corey Ruiz needed help. He languished in prison instead.

Almost immediately after Corey Ruiz was identified as the victim in the deadly officer-involved shooting July 22, posts emerged from chronically online ghouls listing his nearly two decades of crimes.

It was enough that, during a vigil the next day that included Ruiz’s family, his older sister Veronica Ruiz told the crowd, “His criminal record tells a tale of trauma, of pain, of struggle. It does not define who my brother was.”

The details from these criminal records underscore this trauma and pain and struggle in enough ways it’s hard to understand why nothing was done…
