MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Dane County Waste and Renewables is urging people to handle and discard batteries with care, warning that improper disposal in everyday trash bins poses a severe fire hazard to local facilities and waste workers.
According to Dane County Executive Melissa Agard and Dane County Waste & Renewables Director John Welch, battery-related fires are a frequent crisis in Dane County waste facilities, occurring multiple times a month.
To illustrate the severe dangers of mishandled lithium-ion batteries, speakers at Thursday’s press conference referenced a devastating 2023 waste center fire in neighboring Columbia County.
