Madison police chief says suspect possibly identified in recent carjackings

MADISON, Wis. — Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes believes his department may have identified a suspect in a pair of recent carjackings.

MPD officers continue to investigate after four armed men forced a person out of their vehicle Tuesday night. That came less than 48 hours after Monona police said a person was pushed from their car by a passenger who then hopped in the driver’s seat and drove away, an incident police said may be tied to a Monday night carjacking in the City of Madison.

Speaking during the city’s State of Public Safety address on Thursday, Barnes said that the incidents may have been targeted.

“At this point, we don’t believe that there’s an overall danger to the community,” Barnes said. “However, we’re still looking for the suspect and we’ll be able to update you once he’s in custody.”

Barnes said that he and his staff keep track of nationwide crime trends, including carjackings.

“We’re always worried about it,” he said. “So we try to educate our community, we try to tell people to be aware of your surroundings.”
