Madison man arrested after beating elderly man

MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man was arrested over the weekend after police said he beat an elderly man.

Officers were called to Wisconsin Ave. near the intersection of West Mifflin Street at around 9:15 a.m. Saturday for a reported battery. A man told police he was walking to a pharmacy when a stranger hit and kicked him, and continued doing so after he was knocked to the ground.

Police said the stranger ran off after a witness intervened. The witness also gave officers a description of the suspect.

Officers found Joshua Berkhahn, 36, in the 2800 block of East Washington Ave. at the Madison East Shopping Center. Police said he refused to talk to officers and tried to fight when they took him into custody.

Berkhahn was eventually arrested and charged with battery to an elderly person and resisting arrest. He was scheduled to make an initial appearance in court Tuesday afternoon.
