Man found guilty of killing mother over inheritance sentenced to life in prison without parole

MADISON, Wis. — A Glendale man who was found guilty last year in the 2021 murder of his mother will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Aric Way, 52, was found guilty in December 2023 of first-degree intentional homicide as a party to a crime. Online court records show he was sentenced to life in prison without eligibility for extended supervision.

Way, along with 29-year-old Philip Schmidt-Way, were charged in 2022 , roughly a year after a Dodgeville woman was found dead in her home. An autopsy found that carbon monoxide poisoning contributed to her death.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the woman was Way’s mother and Schmidt-Way’s grandmother. Prior to her death, she had reportedly agreed to sell her family farm, which Schmidt-Way would have been in line to inherit upon her death.

Online records show that Schmidt-Way filed a motion Tuesday for a new trial. The court will hold a hearing on the motion as well as a sentencing hearing on March 5.
