University of Wisconsin-Madison student tests positive for tuberculosis, prompting notification to more than 700 people

A University of Wisconsin-Madison student recently tested positive for tuberculosis, prompting campus health officials to notify more than 700 people who may have been exposed to the student.

Here’s what to know:

When did the student test positive and are they on campus?

The student tested postive for active, contagious TB on Jan. 30, said Sarah Clifford Glapa, a spokesperson for University Health Services. The student was last on campus at the end of the fall 2023 semester and lived in Smith Hall.

What is UW-Madison doing in response to the TB case?

University Health Services worked with the city-county health department to gather more information about the student’s history, such as when symptoms began, their travel history and who they have spent time with.

UW-Madison is now contacting friends, classmates, family and others who were in close contact with the student and may be at higher risk for contracting TB. The university provides next steps, including how to get tested for free.
