Madison Lake Rescue Team helps retrieve dog nearly a mile off shore on thinning ice

MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Fire Department says it helped rescue a dog that was nearly a mile off shore on the thinning ice of Lake Monona Wednesday.

The fire department’s lake rescue team launched an airboat from Law Park just after noon on Wednesday to try to retrieve the dog, which was seen about 3/4 of a mile off the shore of Yahara Place Park and Morrison Park.

Members of the lake rescue team used the airboat to approach the dog and guide it back to shore. The fire department says the dog walked back to shore on its own, with the crew following in the airboat in case it fell through the ice.

The dog ultimately made it back to shore to be reunited with its owner.
