MADISON, Wis. — UW-Madison officials are reviewing an incident that occurred outside a career fair on Tuesday. Video shared by group Mecha de UW Madison appears to show a UWPD officer shoving a protester to the ground.
A video posted on Instagram appeared to show protesters entering and blocking a door to the Mechanical Engineering Building while chanting. The group appeared to be carrying bullhorns and Palestinian flags.
At one point, a protester appeared to be shoved to the ground by a UWPD officer who was standing inside the building near the door.
According to Mecha de UW Madison, students were protesting outside the career fair in opposition to the presence of companies BAE Systems, Caterpillar and General Dynamics.
The group, which calls itself pro-Palestinian, claimed that those companies are supplying weapons used by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza.
In a statement to News 3 Now, UW-Madison spokesperson John Lucas said the university responded to multiple attempted disruptions at the career fair. Lucas said one person was cited at around 4:30 p.m. after they tried to disrupt the event and stop students from meeting with recruiters. That person was later released.
