Man who drove over 100 mph in stolen vehicle along Beltline arrested

MONONA, Wis. — Monona police officers said a man was arrested Tuesday after he stole a vehicle and drove over 100 mph along the Beltline.

Officers were notified at around 1:20 p.m. that an outside law enforcement agency was chasing a vehicle that had been stolen at gunpoint in the City of Madison. The vehicle, a BMW 2, was traveling towards the Beltline in Monona from I-90.

Police said the vehicle was spotted going well over 100 mph in afternoon traffic on the westbound Beltline even though it wasn’t being pursued at that point.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly refused to pull over. Officers followed the vehicle but did not match its speed. Eventually, the suspect vehicle exited onto Park Street in the City of Madison.

After Monona officers lost sight of the vehicle, they reached out to Madison police and other agencies for assistance. Madison officers were able to locate the vehicle and take the driver into custody.

The driver, a 21-year-old Madison man, was arrested and faces charges of felony eluding and first-degree recklessly endangering safety. Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney said Madison police are investigating the theft of the car.
