Dear Editor: During the Cold War in the 1950s, the junior senator from Wisconsin, Joe McCarthy, began flinging around accusations of Communist affiliation and infiltration everywhere. This led to the Red Scare, severe curtailment of civil liberties, and the shameful era in our nation’s history which we now know as McCarthyism.
