FBI dismisses Rock County school threats as hoaxes

JANESVILLE — Days after reported threats to Janesville, Milton and Edgerton school buildings, the FBI said an arrest in Minnesota, of someone alleged to have made similar threats, is not related.

The Edgerton Police Department, through the Rock County 911 Communications Center, reiterated Thursday that information on the local threats has been forwarded to the FBI and that those local threats appear to be “unfounded.”

The Janesville and Milton police departments did not immediately respond Thursday to requests for further comment.

The FBI made an arrest on Wednesday in Chaska, Minnesota in relation to a string of school threats in that region. An FBI spokesperson told The Gazette Thursday that the arrest is not linked to any cases in Wisconsin, including in Edgerton, Janesville and Milton.

“The FBI takes potential hoax threats very seriously because it puts innocent people at risk. We work closely with our law enforcement partners to determine their credibility, share information, and take appropriate action. As always, we encourage members of the public to remain vigilant and immediately report anything they consider suspicious to law enforcement,” the FBI said in a statement Thursday.
