PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. — Sauk Prairie School District superintendent Jeff Wright is running to be Wisconsin’s State Superintendent.
Wright launched his campaign on Sunday. He is the first person to step up to challenge current State Superintendent Jill Underly, who has been in office since 2021 and announced her re-election campaign earlier this year.
” What an honor it would be to bring my experience as a teacher, a principal, a superintendent, and community leader to this important role,” Wright said in a Facebook post announcing his candidacy. ” We co-own Wisconsin’s public schools. Our schools and communities both grow into better versions of themselves when we all work boldly together.”
A son of two teachers, Wright was raised in Stevens Point. He was named as this year’s “Administrator of the Year” by the Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance. He ran for State Assembly as a Democrat in the 51st District in 2018 but lost to Republican Todd Novak by just over 300 votes.
Wright received the recommendation of the Wisconsin Education Association Council PAC. He holds a degree from Harvard and previously worked as a high school principal on Chicago’s south side.
