MMSD adopts two budgets for upcoming school year

MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Metropolitan School District adopted two budgets for the 2024-2025 school year in a meeting Monday that anticipate both the passage and rejection of the district’s operations referendum.

Officials said both budgets see MMSD drawing from its General Education Fund to account for items like wages, equity projects and healthcare cost increases. The passage budget will allow for less money to be taken out of the fund, resulting in a balance of $92.3 million, while the non-passage budget will result in a balance of $68.9 million.

If the operations referendum is not successful, officials said an additional 2.06% increase in staff wages would not materialize. The Board would need to begin considering cuts to programming, services and personnel for the 2025-2026 school year, as the district’s revenues would not be capable of supporting its current spending.
