MADISON, Wisc.– Core Spaces is eyeing adding more student housing to its portfolio in Madison. The development company created popular apartment buildings like The Hub and The James.
For UW Madison students, the prospect of new housing isn’t all positive.
“They’re building so many new big fancy apartment complexes and the rent is just going like up and up and up every year,” Sophomore Zoe Larson said.
Kevin Firchow, the Principal Planner with the city’s Development Review & Plan Implementation said that conversations over taking over the Saxony Apartments on N. Frances have not progressed to any formal proposal. Firchow also said the city cannot control rent prices when approving a project.
“Not every inquiry becomes an application and not every application becomes a permitted and built project, but we are just seeing a lot of interest and that that’s coming to us,” he said.
In the past three years, Firchow says the city has approved 2,000 student housing units. These new units help address a growing campus population.
