Man found unresponsive in Madison police custody has died

MADISON, Wis. — A man found unresponsive Monday while in Madison police custody has died, police said Thursday.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation said that the man was a suspect in a vehicle theft at the Best Western hotel on Annamark Drive. Madison police took him into custody after chasing him on foot.

The man was evaluated by EMS at the scene, but was found unresponsive after arriving at the Dane County Jail. He was taken to a local hospital.

In a blog post Thursday, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said the 32-year-old man did not survive.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the incident.
