Lack of snow in Madison creates insulation concerns for soil, and the waterlines underneath

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – It may seem backwards, but a layer of snow on the ground insulates the soil below making it warmer. The recent lack of snow is presenting issues for main water pipelines that can burst freezing temperatures.

Assistant Professor Zac Freedman has been teaching about soil microbiology at UW-Madison for the past 5 years.

“So when it gets very cold like this, not only is it cold to us above ground but the soil also gets very cold and there is going to be what is called that frost layer,” said Freedman…
