Indigenous voter turnout has risen sharply in Wisconsin, data shows

“Sko-vote-den” is a play on the popular Indian Country slang term “skoden” used by organizers in Wisconsin trying to increase Native voter turnout.

Skoden is a call to action that means “let’s go then.” And the organizers of Wisconsin Native Vote , a non-profit and non-partisan group, put “sko-vote-den” on thousands of flyers throughout tribal communities in Wisconsin as fun way to get out the vote.

New data from the organization shows that the effort to get more people to the polls have been working during the past six years, as voter turnout has increased in many tribal communities, including reservations in northern Wisconsin. These efforts were also made in Milwaukee through voter information events at tribal sites in the city…
