Madison schools, city leaders back promoting interim police chief

As Madison’s Police and Fire Commission interviews finalists to lead the city’s Police Department, some are already encouraging the board to promote the person tapped to run the department since its former chief, Shon Barnes, left.

Late last year, while announcing his resignation, Barnes recommended the Police and Fire Commission appoint Assistant Chief John Patterson to head the Police Department until a permanent replacement is selected.

Patterson has nearly 30 years of experience in the Madison Police Department, starting in 1998 as an officer. He also has an educational background in Spanish, criminal justice, and organizational leadership and change, according to his resume…
