City council sends amendment back to the Police Oversight Board – for the sixth time

The Police Civilian Oversight Board supervises and collaborates with the Office of the Independent Monitor. Both relatively new additions to city government, they review and make recommendations regarding police discipline, use of force, and other law enforcement policies and activities.

Under current city ordinance, a set of community-based organizations are tasked with nominating members to serve on the oversight board. Priority is given to organizations with relatively small budgets – under a million dollars a year – that specialize in racial equity, civil rights, and criminal justice reform.

But the board repeatedly failed in its early stages to make quorum and to fill vacancies…
