MADISON, Wis. — Madison schools would have to make cuts to afterschool programming and other initiatives, or push to raise taxes, should federal funds continue to be withheld, Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard said Wednesday.
Voters last year approved two referendums for the Madison Metropolitan School District, including a $100 million operations referendum to support early learning programs and multilingual education. However, Gothard said the district still faces mounting funding challenges.
MMSD is set to see a $12 million drop in general aid compared to 2024 and, while a 45% boost in special education funding was included in the recently-passed state budget, Gothard said the district is still staring down a $64 million budget shortfall for the next school year…
