Finalists announced in search for next Madison police chief

MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Police and Fire Commission on Friday announced three finalists in the search for the city’s next police chief.

John Patterson has been serving as acting police chief after former chief Shon Barnes left Madison to lead the Seattle Police Department in January. Patterson, a 27-year veteran of the Madison Police Department, is one of the finalists.

The other two finalists are Captain Stephanie Drescher and Milwaukee Assistant Police Chief Steven Johnson. Drescher has been with the Madison Police Department for 16 years and is the department’s Captain of Training. Johnson has served with the Milwaukee Police Department since 1997 and has been the Assistant Chief of the Patrol Bureau since December 2021…
