“Public art doesn’t just beautify our spaces, it reflects who we are as a community and creates shared experiences that bring us together across all walks of life,” Deputy Mayor Dr. Linda Vakunta said last Tuesday at a celebration of a new city art installation.
City staff, elected officials, and members of the public braved the July heat to witness the unveiling of ‘Mother and Child,’ a bronze sculpture by Detroit-based artist Austen Brantley.
Now sitting at the base of the Starkweather Creek Pedestrian/Bike path bridge, the piece depicts a mother cradling a baby in her lap. The bronze woman stares peacefully back at the viewer, while her child squirms sleepily in her arms…
