New Residential Speed Limits Across Madison

Speed limits in residential areas have been reduced to 20 miles an hour across the city of Madison. The change comes as part of the “Twenty is Plenty” initiative. The program is part of Vision Zero Madison, a wide-reaching project with the aim of reducing traffic fatalities and serious crash injuries to zero by 2035.

In addition to speed reduction, Vision Zero Madison includes efforts such as road reconstruction projects, improvements to bike lanes and pedestrian crossings, LED light upgrades for pedestrian safety at night, and public information campaigns to raise awareness of traffic safety.

The sites for Vision Zero projects are chosen based on the “High Injury Network:” a data map that identifies the intersections and road segments with the highest likelihood of fatal or serious injury crashes.
