Southern Wisconsin Air Quality: PM2.5 Levels Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Through Thursday Morning

Milwaukee, Wis. – Thick Canadian wildfire smoke is pushing air pollution to dangerous levels across Wisconsin, prompting state officials to urge caution through noon Thursday. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and people with heart or lung conditions, are most at risk as the Air Quality Index hits “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” (Orange) to “Unhealthy” (Red).

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, PM2.5 pollution will blanket the state through midday Thursday, with the potential for “Very Unhealthy” (Purple) conditions in some locations. Cities from Milwaukee, Madison, and Fond du Lac to Janesville and Kenosha will all experience reduced air quality, while outdoor air in places like Baraboo, Lake Geneva, and Sheboygan could also reach hazardous levels.

Residents are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activity and move events inside—especially those in at-risk groups. People with asthma or heart conditions should have quick-relief medication on hand and follow their care plans. The DNR warns symptoms such as shortness of breath or unusual fatigue require prompt medical attention.
