A classic summer sandwich gets an upgrade

Some restaurants try to stand apart by finding a way to amp the “B” in their BLTs, but Monty’s Blue Plate Diner gets it done by adding a “G.”

That’s the easiest way to describe this east side joint’s take on the classic bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, the Americana dish that has hovered on most summer sandwich menus since the late 1940s, when tomatoes became an affordable, year-round staple at the grocery store.

But while many modern BLTs rely on the meat — deploying stacks of thick-cut bacon, often coated with brown sugar to sweeten the deal — Monty’s G.B.L.T. sandwich calls on a pair of Southwest-inspired condiments: house-made guacamole and cumin-chipotle mayonnaise…
