Vintage Threads, one of two new vintage shops on Atwood Avenue, opened its doors this spring — and it is not starved for inventory. Owner Owen Tauscheck, now 19, has been collecting treasures since he was in fifth grade.
“In Madison, you have to have a lot of Badgers stuff,” Tauscheck said, pointing to racks of red and white lining a whole wall of his shop at 2160 Atwood Ave. Here, a collector with a keen eye might find a 1991 Bulls championship shirt with a faded Horace Grant signature, or score a Metallica tee while heavy metal music plays over the sound system.
Nearby, another new vintage shop — Arbor House Collective at 2334 Atwood Ave. — has a more earthy aesthetic and a boutique-like atmosphere.
Each of these shops aims to thrive by doing the same thing in different ways: selling used but useful things they love to people who want to find a diamond in the rough.
Finding true vintage threads
Tauscheck waits on customers at Vintage Threads clad in a Slayer T-shirt. Among his inventory are a 1999 Stephon Marbury Minnesota Timberwolves jersey ($35) and several copies of Super Mario 3 for the original Nintendo Entertainment System, priced at $17.99-$24.99 (video game console sold separately)…
