MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Fire Department responded to multiple reports of blown manhole covers and black smoke coming from underground Sunday afternoon. As of 7 p.m., an MFD spokesperson confirmed the fire was put out.
The fire department and Madison Gas and Electric established a safety perimeter around the area of West Washington to West Mifflin Street and Henry Street to Broom Street. All roads have since reopened.
Residents in the areas between West Washington Avenue & Langdon Street and Broom & Fairchild Streets were expected to be affected by power outages as crews work to address the emergency. Power was set to return soon after 7 p.m…
