Dairy Drive homeless encampment faces likely closure next month

MADISON, Wis. — The encampment of tiny homes on Dairy Drive that began housing people in 2021 is facing likely closure in September after the City of Madison’s Board of Public Works recommended the dismantling of the site last week.

“We are working very hard so that the people that are still here will get into housing before it closes,” said Dairy Drive Program Coordinator Brenda Konkel. “But it’s been very difficult.”

The board’s recommendation, which will only go through if the city’s common council votes to approve it at their Sep. 2 meeting, was not unexpected.

“The funds are depleted,” said City of Madison Community Development Director Jim O’Keefe. “When it opened in the fall of 2021, the expectation was that it would continue for two years. And so we’ve been able to stretch that a little bit longer.”…
