Wisconsin honors its most decorated and long forgotten helicopter pilot

MADISON, Wis. — Scott R. Alwin was the kind of soldier legends are made of — but for decades, almost no one outside his family knew his name.

The Wisconsin Army captain flew five tours during the Vietnam War. He invented a helicopter maneuver still taught to pilots today. He came home with more than 130 medals — including a Purple Heart. And at one point, enemy forces put the highest bounty of the war on his head.

Yet, his sisters say his story faded from view…
