Dane County Board delays vote on jail contract over mail issue

The Dane County Board postponed voting Thursday on a five-year contract that would hire a private firm to provide communication services for people detained at the county jail.

Keith Furman, who represents part of Madison’s west side on the board, proposed delaying the vote until Sept. 18 over last-minute changes of the contract with Smart Communications.

The original contract would have ended inmates’ access to physical copies of their mail and instead provided them with electronically scanned copies that could be viewed on tablets. Hours before the vote, however, Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett announced removing that change…
