‘That Book is Dangerous’ takes on left-leaning censorship

Madison-based author Adam Szetela hates censorship. He remembers when, after the Sept. 11 attacks, some of his favorite bands — Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down and others critical of America’s foreign policy — were censored on the radio.

“I have memories of being super pissed off about that,” he said. Fast forward a decade and a half and Szetela, by then in graduate school, was surprised to find censorship in a new setting, one he identified with — the political left, policing its own.

Szetela took this on in his Ph.D. dissertation at Cornell University. This summer, that became his new book, “That Book Is Dangerous! How Moral Panic, Social Media, and the Culture Wars Are Remaking Publishing,” published by MIT Press on Aug. 12…
