Letter | UW needs to address reckless pedestrians

Dear Editor: I was just out walking on the UW campus and I witnessed a girl just about get killed on at the Johnson Street crossing outside Gordon Commons.

She had her attention focused on her cellphone and marched right past the people standing on the curb waiting for the walk sign and right in front of a Metro bus. Fortunately, the driver hit his brakes and his horn and she ran back to the curb.

She was very lucky, but it’s easy to see how someone else might not be. A little over a year ago I wrote UW Chancellor Jennifer Mnukin’s office about the lack of special awareness and plain reckless behavior of some students on campus. This was after seeing three students pushing a cart loaded with lab equipment out into moving traffic, again on Johnson Street. I suggested the chancellor might want to send out some sort of notice for students to pay attention to their surroundings and to take care in obeying the traffic laws…
