MADISON, Wis. – Public Health Madison & Dane County on Wednesday issued an overdose spike alert.
PHMDC said EMS in the area responded to five confirmed overdoses within the last 24 hours. It’s unclear what caused the spike, however PHMDC said there may be a change in the make-up of street drugs in the community that might include opiates, fentanyl or other synthetic drugs.
Those who use drugs or know someone who does are advised to remember the signs of an overdose:
- Pale, sweaty or clammy skin
- Lips/fingertips turn blue
- Slow or irregular breathing: gasping, gurgling, or snoring
- Difficult or unable to wake
