Neighbors unite to combat fire on Madison’s isthmus

MADISON, Wis. — A burning candle in an occupied apartment on Madison’s isthmus caused a fire Monday, uniting neighbors in combating the fire prior to firefighters’ arrival, according to the fire department.

Fire crews responded near the corner of South Livingston Street at around 3:46 p.m. and discovered a fire on a table inside a neighboring apartment. Neighbors entered the apartment and used several fire extinguishers to knock down the fire prior to the Madison FIre Department’s arrival.

As Engine 3 approached the apartment where the fire occurred, smoke alarms were sounding, although the smoke was banked to the floor. A thermal imaging camera showed no significant heat signatures in the building nor did it extend to other parts of the apartment…
