Improperly discarded cigarettes to blame for Madison west side apartment fire

MADISON, Wis. — Improperly discarded cigarettes were to blame in attributing a fire at an apartment on Madison’s west side Monday afternoon.

The Madison Fire Department was called near the intersection of Schroeder Road and Laurie Drive just after 1:40 p.m. after occupants reported seeing smoke in the building possibly coming from an apartment.

Ladder Co. 7 entered the building and met with maintenance personnel at the door. They determined that the smoke had been coming from second-floor unit, where smoke alarms going off…
