Teacher compensation in the Madison Metropolitan School District is based on a combination of years of experience and the type of degree a teacher has. But when MMSD adjusted the pay level for new teachers joining the district, they didn’t bump veteran teachers up the pay scale accordingly.
That’s referred to as “salary compression,” and the result is that veteran teachers who were hired before those changes took place are not always compensated according to their actual years of experience.
