If you were to ask Wisconsin fans, ‘What is the biggest problem for Badgers football going forward, outside of a coaching change?’ Most would answer with a very resounding, ‘The quarterback position.’ It’s been a mess for years, mostly due to injuries, but the backups have been terrible. Luke Fickell, in his post-game comments after the Minnesota game, seems to agree.
He spent a couple of minutes talking about the position and called it the Achilles Heel of his program for the last few years. In his tenure, he’s never been able to take on a starting quarterback and play them the entire year. This year may have been the worst at the position. He lost his starting quarterback in the first half of the first game, and he never really returned (he tried to against Maryland, but it only re-aggravated the injury).

Then, to make matters worse, the backup with starting experience, Danny O’Neil, who had struggled and been benched, was brought back after more practice reps, only to be injured for the season. Luke Fickell was stuck with a career backup for an FCS program (Southern Illinois) who transferred in for his final season, and a true freshman who was actively trying to learn to read college defenses…
