Dear Editor: The sad history of publicly subsidized low-income housing is construction of poorly designed and located buildings. The city of Madison insists upon marching down this path with a horrendous development of 93 units at 4506-4514 Verona Road that will house some of the most vulnerable families in Dane County.
This history began when the federal government approved the construction of Cabrini-Green, 1942, 1957, 1962 (demolition in 2011) in Chicago and Pruitt-Igoe construction1954 (demolition in 1976) in St. Louis.
It was a conscious policy to make the housing less than inviting, least the tenants become too comfortable and consequently “lose motivation to improve their lives.” The buildings were deliberately made abusive…
