Opinion | The paper that keeps on giving; the Cap Times turns 108

Tomorrow, Dec. 13, marks 108 years since the first edition of The Capital Times rolled off a fourth-hand press in the basement of a building on King Street just down from where the Tipsy Cow is today.

The founder, William T. Evjue, described it in a piece he wrote about the “inside story” of the paper’s beginning as it began its 10th year of publication in 1927, having survived fierce efforts by many powerful interests to shut it down.

“There are many who will contend that no newspaper went through a fiercer and more bitter fight for its life than did The Capital Times in the early days of its existence,” he wrote. “Time and time again it seemed that the fight was a hopeless one and that the ship was sinking.”…
