Opinion | Monona couple brought Aldo Leopold Nature Center to life

The Aldo Leopold Nature Center off Femrite Drive in Monona is a gem that annually connects hundreds of Madison-area school children — and grown-ups, too — with the joys and wonders of nature.

I’ve written about the programs it offers and the experiences it provides several times over the past 30 years. It was founded in 1994 thanks in no small way to the efforts of a tireless Monona couple, Peggy and Jon Traver, a former Monona alderman.

In 1993 Peggy and Jon led the successful effort to preserve from development the 50 acres where the nature center and the nearby Monona Woodland Park now sit. They are both splendid natural getaways from the bustle of urban life…
