Lights, camera and action in Wisconsin

Pauline Kael, the late, celebrated film critic for The New Yorker, once described the excitement of going to the movies like this: “There’s nothing quite like that moment when the lights go down and all our hopes are concentrated on the screen.”

With due respect to Kael, there’s something quite like that moment reverberating right now among filmmakers and film lovers in Wisconsin. The enthusiasm is palpable.

Starting Jan. 1, for the first time in more than a decade (and after a spirited behind-the-scenes effort to make it happen), Wisconsin will have a film incentive program. Offering tax credits on film production expenditures is a way to attract moviemakers to the state…
