Proposed Madison charter school passes hurdle, but more steps remain

A proposed independent charter school in Madison has passed the first stage of the approval process to apply for charter status with the Universities of Wisconsin’s Office for Educational Opportunity, which has authority under state law to authorize and oversee new charter schools in the state.

North Star Preparatory is seeking to provide a tuition-free high school that would be based on Madison’s north side. The school would serve students in 9th through 12th grade.

The school has until Jan. 12 to submit an application to begin the second phase of the approval process, according to Mark Pitsch, a Universities of Wisconsin spokesperson. Pitsch said the Office for Educational Opportunity hadn’t received the school’s application as of Thursday…
