Verona had five grapplers finish in the top four to take second place with 129 points in the 24-team Janesville Craig Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 17. Whitewater (151) won the team title. The Wildcats rolled by Janesville Parker 48-12 in a Big Eight Conference dual meet on Thursday, Jan. 15, at Vel Phillips Memorial High School.
Verona girls wrestling coach Brian Marse said he focuses on quarter nelson, half nelsons, single and double leg takedowns and instills the ability to sprawl.
“We try to specialize in a few moves and have some more to use when we need them,” Marse said. “I tell the girls sometimes your best offense is a good defense. If they come out really aggressive and take a shot, spin around, go behind or front head lock really helps your chances of scoring. You know you are in a good spot when you don’t have to think about it.”…
