Letter | Madison’s war on cars goes back decades

Dear Editor: This is to compliment Paul Fanlund’s column, “A New Year’s appeal to Madison’s ruling ‘uniparty.'”

Fanlund was speaking for the silent majority of Dane County residents and a sizeable silent minority of Madison city residents.

Former Gov. Lee Dreyfus coined the phrase, “Madison is 30 square miles surrounded by reality.” Former Mayor Paul Soglin didn’t mind the good-natured jab. In 2013 he proposed Madison’s motto be “77 square miles surrounded by reality” as the city’s (tongue in cheek) motto. It almost passed…
