At Union Corners Tavern, everyone is having a good time

When sisters Taylor, 4, and Hazel, 6, entered Union Corners Tavern on a windy early evening in January, they hightailed it straight to the Skee-Ball machine.

Hazel in particular is excellent at the game, said mom Crystal Stauffacher. Throughout their meal, the girls toggled between eating and starting another game, playing side by side on the restaurant’s two free machines.

Union Corners Tavern, 2438 Winnebago St., opened last November in a space formerly occupied by Touch of Ukraine and Union Corners Brewery. Mike Kull, co-owner of Rare Steakhouse, tapped chef Jake Lawler, formerly of Vintage Brewing, to run the space.

Between lunch and dinner service, general manager (and Lawler’s childhood friend) Brandon Horowitz was giving a server tips on fostering customer connections. Remind people we make our bread in-house, he suggested. Share some of your favorite dishes…
