Madison parents lobby for Wisconsin bill to increase recess time

Two Madison mothers are leading an effort to change a state rule so elementary students can have more recess time.

Wisconsin school districts are required by law to provide a certain amount of hours of instruction each school year. A state administrative rule allows schools to count no more than 30 minutes a day toward instruction, an amount parents and advocates say is too little.

Allison Grigg and Victoria Carey, two Madison moms whose children attend Chávez Elementary School, helped craft a bill, AB810, that would increase the amount of recess time that can be counted toward the instruction hours to as much as 60 minutes for students in kindergarten through sixth grade…
