Verona sophomore Brecken Curran broke the Big Eight Conference record and pool record en route to winning a conference championship in the 100-yard backstroke on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Middleton pool.
Curran swam the 100 back in a record-setting time of 49.71 seconds. He took second in the 100 butterfly (52.14) and helped the Wildcats finish third in the conference meet with 340 points. Middleton won the conference team title 652.5-465 over runner-up Madison West. The Wildcats took third even without senior John Olajos, the top swimmer in the freestyle for the Wildcats. Olajos had an illness and missed the meet.
“The conference taper group had season-best times in 13 of their 15 individual races,” Verona coach Bill Wuerger said. “The sectional taper group more than held their own. The team overcame the absence of one of our top swimmers.”…
